30th-Dec-2010 06:48 pm - How to Credit
BST Graphics
I've noticed that a lot of people have problems crediting.  I don't know if it's because they don't know what that means, don't know how to do it, or just don't want to credit.  Either way, I've made this little tutorial for you.

Step One: Sign into your account (duh).

Step Two: In the navigation bar, hover over Profile and click on Manage Userpics.

Step Three: If you're adding credits to an icon you had already uploaded, find the icon and skip to the next step.  If you're uploading a new userpic from your computer, click Browse and find the pic.  If you're uploading from the Internet (though see my stance on hotlinking), enter the URL.  Now go to the text boxes below that section.

Step Four:
I prefer that you credit in the Comments box.  Click on that box and type in credit: <lj user="bloodstnedtears">.  If you're adding to an icon that was already uploaded, go to the bottom of the page and click Save Settings.  If you're uploading a new on, click Proceed

And you're done!  =)

Don't know why you should credit?  I think that would be obvious, but here is a wonderful tutorial on how and why to credit by eyesthatslay .  To cover the few things she missed, most of the programs we use cost money.  Some fonts cost money.  Some textures cost money.  Yes, this is just a hobby, but sometimes hobbies cost money.  And even if we aren't paying for our resources, it takes a lot of time and effort to find the perfect texture and font and style to go with a particular image. The longer you've been making icons and the more effort you put into growing as an icon maker, the more work it takes because you're discovering new things and you're caring a little more.  So please credit.  Not to would be so disrespectful.

Having about enough of watching people credit poorly, I decided to create this community.

The Mission: If you make graphics, layouts, or anything else that requires users to credit you somewhere in their journals, you've probably come across your fair share of users who, for whatever reason, simply refuse to credit.  Basically what this community is here to do is allow you to share your credit-enforcing stories and, most importantly share the names of those who refuse to credit or who have a habit of dispersing your work on other sites.

The Reason: There really isn't much you can do when someone refuses to credit your work.  Your best options are to PM the person and hope they credit or start tagging your images with a watermark of your username.  However, coming here and sharing the usernames of the people who refuse to credit can keep other people from allowing those people the use of their work.  Many makers are changing their account from public to friends only because of the number of people who are either not crediting or are taking their work and posting it on other sites/communities.  By sharing your experiences and the usernames of people on this community, you can keep these people from being accepted into other communities or friends only journals where they would steal the work of others.

The Rules: They're very simple, really.
1. Post what you like, as long as it's related to an issue with someone stealing your work.
2. Do not make angry posts or comments about the name.  Sorry if using the word Nazi is offensive to you, but get over it.
3. Do not make angry posts or comments because you're on the list of people who don't credit.  You did it to yourself.
4. Be polite.
5. Try to use correct grammar and spelling, to the very best of your ability.  I'd like to be able to actually understand what you say.
6. Cursing is allowed and even welcomed.  If you don't like cursing, sorry, but welcome to the real world.  We cuss here.
7. As the mod, I have the right o change the rules at any time for any reason.

If you break any of these rules, I will delete your post and possibly ban you from the community as well.

Thanks!
